West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has appointed former state chief secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay as her Chief Advisor. She had earlier sought a six month extension for Bandyopadhyay, who was subsequently recalled by the centre to the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).

This is said to have been a direct result of Bandyopadhyay and Mamata making Prime Minister Narendra Modi wait 30 minutes at a review meet of Cyclone Amphan and then walking out abruptly after handing over a report.

"I will not allow Alapan Banerjee to leave Nabanna. He is now the Chief Adviser to Chief Minister", Mamata has been quoted as saying.

H K Dwivedi has been appointed as the new Chief Secretary of Bengal.

Despite Bandyopadhyay's retirement on 31 May, the centre is expected to take action against him.

"Govt sources say chargesheet will be issued and action will be taken against West Bengal Chief secy - Alapan Bandopadhya, despite he superannuating today", Times Now journalist Megha Prasad has said.

This action is reportedly expected after he failed to report to DoPT today.
