A woman named Anjali Jain clarified to the Supreme Court that she preferred to stay with her parents rather than her husband, Mohammed Ibrahim Siddiqui, a man who converted to Hinduism to marry her, Bar and Bench has reported. He had converted to Hinduism on 23 February 2018 and adopted the name Aryan Arya. After the conversion, the couple got married at an Arya Samaj Temple at Raipur, Chhattisgarh on 25 February, 2018.

The girl’s parents got to know the details of her marriage from outside sources. While she tried to leave her home with her partner, she was found by police who took her to Sakhi centre, a crisis shelter for women maintained by the central government.

The appellant Siddiqui claimed that his wife had been forcefully held by her father Ashok Jain. He also claimed that the police had incorrectly recorded her statement in her Habeas Corpus petition before the Chattisgarh High Court. When the High Court heard the case, it gave the woman the choice to stay with either her parents or her lover or to be accommodated in a hostel. Faced with an unfavourable verdict, Siddiqui moved to the Supreme Court for obtaining the custody of his wife.

A Supreme Court bench including Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud heard the case last week. However, when she appeared before the court today (27 August) , she clarified that she preferred to stay with her parents.
