Mavel, a Czech Republic based hydel turbine company has signed a deal with Salai Holdings Private Limited for installing mini hydro power projects in water-rich Manipur, reports Economic Times.

The Manipur government has reportedly given the nod to Salai to take up the smart hydel project.

The turbine manufacturer, Mavel, which sells the machines in over 50 countries, including USA and Canada, would provide logistic support to Salai in setting up the projects.

Salai is an Imphal-based firm and would start its maiden venture at Sekmai barrage in Imphal West as a pilot project.

"Ours will be an environment-friendly project. We will only affix the turbine from Mavel at the water spillway to generate power," Narengbam Samarjit, chairman and managing director of Salai was quoted as saying.

Salai thinks that the power project will improve the state economy, considering the low cost to generate energy.

Mavel Engineers would finalise the size of the turbine to be installed at Sekmai barrage and the capacity of power it will generate, Samarjit said.

The state government, at present, purchases power from companies at high cost and sells the same under subsidised rates, costing crores of rupees to the exchequer.
