Union Minister for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Nitin Gadkari on Thursday (27 December) said that nearly 80 per cent of Ganga will be cleaned in the next three months. He added that by March 2020, the holy river will be completely clean, reports Mint.

This announcement comes just before the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj which is scheduled to take place between 15 January and 4 March 2019.

Under the Namami Gange Programme, the minister also laid the foundation stone for 11 projects aimed at rejuvenating the Yamuna river in Delhi.

Speaking on the issue of pollution in the national capital, Gadkari was quoted by Mint as saying, “Solid waste, liquid waste and air pollution have to be approached scientifically to address the issue.”

Gadkari also suggested that the stubble can be used to generate bio-fuel instead of burning it and causing air pollution.

It was earlier reported that the efforts to clean Ganga are bearing fruit as marine life in the river is all set to flourish as the water quality has been showing a marked improvement.
