Bahujan Samaj party (BSP) leader Mayawati yesterday (21 May) removed senior party leader Ramveer Upadhyay, once considered her right-hand man, from the party for his alleged support for candidates belonging to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, reports News18.

Upadhyay is the member of the Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly from the Sadabad seat, and had previously served under Mayawati’s government as the former state energy minister.

Apart from being sacked from the party, Upadhyay’s role as the chief whip in the state assembly has also been ended.

The accusations against Upadhyay are laid down in a letter authored by the party general secretary Mewa Lal Gautam; he claims that Upadhyay was warned to cease his anti-party activities in the current general elections, but persisted in his actions.

Upadhyay is accused of supporting BJP candidates in the seats of Aligarh, Fatehpur Sikri and Hathras. He was seen to be getting close to the BJP after his wife Seema Upadhyay declined to run as the BSP candidate from the Fatehpur Sikri (Agra rural) constituency.
