The official twitter account of Meerut Police on Friday (1 May) took cognisance of a complaint against a local vegetable seller for displaying a saffron flag on his cart and later ‘clarified’ after social media outrage.

An Urdu channel named Tehzeeb TV India complained about a vegetable seller on Twitter for selling veggies while displaying a saffron flag on his cart. The Urdu TV channel also tagged a slew of police handles.

In little over an hour the IG Range Meerut twitter account directed Meerut Police to look into the matter. Subsequently the Meerut police tweeted that it has directed the Kankarkhed police station in charge to take action in the matter.

This led to outrage on social media with many questioning whether it is a crime to display saffron flags.

The Meerut police then subsequently clarified that the vegetable seller has all the required permissions to sell vegetables and has been advised to adhere to social distancing and lockdown norms.

People though were not ready to relent and demanded to known why cognisance was taken over the complaint against saffron flags in the first place.

A few days ago the Cyberabad police in Hyderabad had been questioned by social media users after it indulged a social media user who complained against vegetable sellers for displaying saffron flags.
