The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) yesterday (16 May) launched an online portal for states to coordinate the movement of migrant workers using buses and Shramik Special trains which are being operated by the Indian Railways across the length and breadth of the nation, reports Economic Times.

Named as the National Migrant Information System (NMIS), the portal has been developed by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). It maintains a central repository and promises to help the sending and receiving state governments and concerned district authorities to ask for and give their acceptance in a seamless online format.

The NMIS is likely to facilitate smoother and speedy communication between different states ad Union Territories (UTs) while bringing down the workload at the level of field officers.

The portal generates a unique ID for every migrant while storing the details of his/her name, age, mobile number, originating and destination districts and the date of travel. Thus, it is likely to help the states track the movement of the people, and easily conduct contact tracing activity, if and when required.

The MHA has directed the state governments to depute a nodal officer for the portal at state and district levels to ensure robust and smooth functioning.
