Milk Prices Touch Sky-High Levels In Pakistan, Leaving Diesel, Petrol Behind: Reports

The price of milk reached a record high in major Pakistani cities on the day of Muharram yesterday (10 September), reports The Economic Times. In Karachi and the Sindh Province it was sold for Rs 140 per litre.
The high rates brought a surprise as they were higher than the rates of petrol and diesel. Two days ago, petrol and diesel were selling Rs 113 per litre and Rs 91 per litre respectively.
Sabeels (stalls) are setup in various parts of the city offering milk, juices, and water to the people taking part in the processions of Muharram. This results in high demand of milk which increases the price.
“We set up milk Sabeel every year and simply didn't want to skip it this year due to a hike in milk prices,” said a resident who set up sabeel. He, however, added he had never seen milk price going this high in his lifetime.
According to media reports in Pakistan, the Commissioner Office in Karachi had setup price at Rs 94 per litre. Reports also alleged Commissioner Iftikhar Shallwani for not doing enough to control the exorbitant rates.
