Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi led Government is said to be planning to increase the monthly financial support provided to children who lost their parents to the COVID-19 pandemic from Rs 2,000 to Rs 4,000 per month, reports Livemint.

Union Ministry of Women and Child Development has made the proposal in this regard.

So far, as many as 3,250 applications have been received under the PM-CARES for Children scheme announced in May this year to support the children who have lost both their parents or the surviving parent, or the legal guardian parent, or the or adoptive parents to COVID-19.

The scheme was rolled out following the scathing second wave of the pandemic which saw daily fresh cases of the COVID-19 surge to as high as about four lakh a day at its peak.

As per the data from the Ministry, out of the 3,250 applications received under the said scheme so far, the concerned District Magistrates have approved 667 applications as of date. The data also shows that so far applications have been received from 467 districts across the country.
