Mumbai’s Mumbai’s Metro 4th Line’s much-needed car shed will be built on private land in Thane’s Kasarwadavali by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), as reported by the Indian Express.

Earlier the MMRDA wanted to buy plots in Wadala, Aarey Colony and Gaimukh Nagar in Thane for building the two-car shed for the Metro line 4. This line will connect Wadala-Ghatkoper-Thane and Kasarwadavali. While MMRDA is still in talks with state and central agencies for its car shed in Mumbai, for Thane it decided to buy private land.

Metro 4 was initially only planned from Wadala to Kasawadawali but was later extended to Gaymukh in Thane and GPO on the southern side in Mumbai. Pegged at 14,549 crores, the length of the corridor is 32.3 km and so for such an extensive network, MMRDA requires two depots to accommodate the rakes. As per estimates, the corridor via Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Marg and PD’Mello Road, will cater to 7 lakh passengers a day.

A senior official from MMRDA mentioned that they had examined the proposed site, which was 20 hectares, and found it suitable for the construction of a car shed. A notification would be issued soon and it would be checked if the land is free of any encumbrance.

The Metro 4 is expected to take a massive load off the Central Railway as it is expected to cater to the next business district.
