Netflix, the American video streaming service, will be introducing a low-cost mobile option for subscribers in a bid to expand its local user base in India, reports Live Mint.

The online service currently has plans starting at Rs 500 per month in India, which is much higher than its rivals like Amazon Prime Video and Hotstar which offers their services at Rs 999 and Rs 1,200 per year.

The report cited sources as saying that the new plan will be an addition to existing ones and not a substitute to them.

Chief Product Officer of Netflix Greg Peters, during a global media outreach event in Los Angeles, reportedly admitted that the product was niche and high-end for the Indian market. “We are however, looking for ways to expand the user base,” Peters was quoted as saying in the report, alluding to the possibility of new price options.
