Samsung, which recently took the wraps off its ‘foldable’ phones, plans to manufacture around one million of such phones, Mint has reported. These phones, which have a flexible display, are expected to hit the markets in the first half of 2019.

D J Koh, who heads Samsung’s Mobile Communication business, is reported to have told the press that the phone will be launched next year ‘no matter what’. Samsung Electronics, the South Korea-based company, is the world’s largest smartphone maker, trailed by the Chinese company, Huawei.

Also, according to Yonhap News Agency, the new phone is expected to be quite expensive, with retail prices hovering around 2 million won or $1,770. In comparison, Apple’s most expensive iPhone is priced at $1,449.

It was reported in June this year (2018) that worldwide smartphone shipments have slowed down for the first since the launch of iPhone in 2007. In the last decade, smartphone manufacturers, from Apple to Xiaomi, have tried to win consumers through incremental improvements in processor capacity, cameras, storage options, price etc.

However, consumer trends are also changing. Wearables like smartwatches are increasingly doing the functions that previously only smartphones could do. Earlier, in a shock move, Apple had announced that it would stop disclosing the number of iPhones it sells.
