A North Korean missile might have crashed into one of its own cities due to a failure minutes into its launch, reports The Independent.

Officials in the United States said the Hwasong-12 intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) when fired last April was presumed to have disintegrated in mid-air. However, evidence now suggests that it crashed in Tokchon, a city with a population of 200,000 that is located 140 km north of the country's capital of Pyongyang.

The missile was launched from the Pukchang airfield from where it flew for around 38 km. It likely exploded on impact, resulting in significant destruction reports The Diplomat. An official of the United States said that the first stage engines of the missile failed around a minute post the launch.
