The government has roped in public sector oil and gas companies to set up 100 pressure swing adsorption (PSA) oxygen generation plants at public health facilities in Kerala, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, Karnataka, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Goa and Odisha, reports Times of India.

The plants will generate medical grade oxygen at different capacities to cater to the needs of the hospitals with 200-500 beds. These plants will be fully funded by the oil companies through their corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds.

The companies have already placed the necessary orders with Indian vendors for setting up the oxygen plants, which will start becoming operational from this month onwards, and will be completed by July.

The plants will be based on the PSA technology developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) along with the Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The technology involves the absorption of nitrogen from ambient air to concentrate oxygen which is then supplied straight to the patients in hospitals.
