Olympic medallist and one of India’s top badminton players Saina Nehwal today joined the BJP in presence of the party’s national general secretary Arun Singh, ANI reported.

Nehwal in recent days had come out in the support of the citizenship amendment act (CAA) and also praised Prime Minister’s speech at Delhi’s Ramleela Maidan.

The 29-year-old badminton player is one of India’s most successful athletes, having won the bronze medal at the London Olympics and is a three times commonwealth gold medallist.

Nehwal has also been a former world number one and won the silver medal at the 2015 Jakarta world championship.

Nehwal has been credited with popularising the game among India’s youths. She first burst into national limelight during the 2008 Beijing Olympics when she became the first Indian woman to reach the quarter finals.

She is one of the many top players coached by acclaimed coach Pulella Gopichand, with the others being P V Sindhu, Sai Praneeth, Parupalli Kashyap and Srikanth Kidambi.
