Over 1,000 Coronavirus Positive Cases In Tamil Nadu Traced To Nizamuddin Tablighi Jamaat Congregations So Far

Tamil Nadu coronavirus cases rise.


The number of those who have tested positive for Coronavirus (Covid-19) in Tamil Nadu with the source being the Tablighi Jamaat Aalami Markaz Nizamuddin congregations held at Delhi last month has topped 1,000.

Tamil Nadu Health Secretary Beela Rajesh told reporters at her daily briefly that 98 more persons tested positive for Covid-19 today (13 April) with 91 of them being traced to the Nizamuddin Markaz.

Today’s tally takes the total number of those affected by the pandemic to 1,172 with the Tablighi Jamaat congregations accounting for 1,062.

Besides Tabligh Jamaat preachers from Thailand and Indonesia account for another six Covid-19 cases. At least 15 persons have got infected with Coronavirus after coming in contact with them.

The State’s first death occurred after a 54-year-old person in Madurai came into contact with the Thailand Tablighi Jamaat preachers. So far, the pandemic has claimed 11 victims in the State.

Rajesh said since the State Government had been able to trace all sources, there was no cause for panic. Till now, 58 persons have recovered.

Nearly 33,000 people are under home quarantine, while 138 are in isolated wards at various hospitals across the State. Over 60,000 persons have completed their mandatory quarantine period of 15 days, she said.

State capital Chennai accounts for 208 - the highest in Tamil Nadu - for the total Coronavirus cases. Thirty-one children below 10 years of age have tested positive for the pandemic virus so far.

Thirty-four of the 38 districts in the State have been affected by Coronavirus.
