Villagers in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district were tied up to trees and brutally thrashed by Left-Wing terrorists for refusing to attend a meeting they had called in the area, reports The Times of India.

According to Dantewada Superintendent of Police Abhishek Pallava, who was quoted by the Press Trust of India, 35 villagers were injured in the attack. At least 10 of the 35 villagers were injured “grievously" in the attack, he said.

At least 16 of those thrashed had been admitted to the Kuakonda community health centre, while another villager with severe injuries was admitted to Dantewada district hospital, Pallava told PTI.

Many villagers, who sustained the injuries in the attack, refused to take treatment fearing Naxals would punish them for seeking help from police.

According to the police, this incident of mass beating was the first of its kind in the area and was a result of frustration over recent arrests.

Nine villagers have come forward to file a complaint.
