The Central government on Wednesday (1 November) said that over 4,358 Km of national highways have been constructed in mountainous and border areas in last five years at a cost of Rs 70,733 crore.
"In the last five years, 4,358 km of National Highway have been constructed in the mountainous and border areas with an expenditure of Rs 70,733 crore," Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha.
The minister further informed that a number of works for development of national highways in mountainous states and border areas have been ongoing.
Of these, 81 projects have been ongoing in Uttarakhand, 53 in West Bengal, 51 in Assam, 47 in Arunachal, 44 in Nagaland, 41 in Himachal, 34 in J&K, 31 in Manipur, 29 in Sikkim, 22 each in Tripura, Mizoram and Meghalaya, and two in Ladakh.
"Based on their stage of progress, these works are targeted to be completed between 2021 and 2023," the minister said.
