Pad-Woman Of Anna University: Research Scholar Makes Bio-Degradable Sanitary Napkins From Cellulose Derivatives

A research scholar from Anna University, Chennai has come up with a biodegradable sanitary napkin that does not contain plastic and can degrade within a month, ANI has reported.
The project is developed by research scholar Preethi Ramadoss, who works at the department of crystal growth centre in Anna University. The sanitary napkin is part of her work towards a doctoral degree at the varsity, in which she is being advised by her doctoral supervisor, Arivuoli Dakshanamoorthy.
According to the report, Preethi, when asked about her inspiration behind the project, said that she made this product after witnessing problems faced by women during their periods. She also cited her love for the environment as one of the reasons behind pursuing this project.
“Complications that women face during periods and my love for environment inspired me to invent this napkin. It degrades within a month and can also be flushed in toilet,” Preethi was quoted in the ANI report as saying.
Shedding more light on the materials being used in the napkins, Preethi said that the napkin is made of cellulose derivatives. It has turmeric, vettiver (camel grass), neem and lemon extracts for beneficial effects on the skin.
Furthermore, she said that the product has been tested against common pathogens responsible for bacterial vaginosis in women.
