Path Cleared For Apple, Samsung And Other Mobile Makers To Increase Production In India

The central government has cleared the path for mobile manufacturers like Apple, Samsung, Oppo, Vivo and Foxconn to increase their production in Indian plants by removing a contentious plant machinery evaluation clause from the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, Economic Times has reported.
“The empowered committee of secretaries met on Friday and decided to remove the clause, which evaluated plant and machinery brought into India at 40 per cent of its value, and has agreed to a few other changes so that manufacturing could shift to India in a big way”, the report quotes an official as saying.
While Apple is reportedly keen on shifting a chunk of its production to India, it was apprehensive over a few clauses laid out in the PLI scheme. The premium smartphone manufacturer is seeking to shift production via its contractors like Foxconn, Wistron and Pegatron.
Besides removing the evaluation clause, the government has also added a force majeure clause to allow companies to seek relief in cases of Covid-19 like calamities.
