Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Monday (23 March) announced a statewide curfew in Maharashtra. Only essential services will be operational in the state till 31 March.
As per an ANI report, Thackeray said he was compelled to impose a state-wide curfew after people were not listening to government’s orders.
As per reports, despite the statewide imposition of section 144, many people were seen venturing outside and main roads were packed with vehicles.
“People should take this war against COVID-19 seriously. Section 144 of CrPC is invoked so that essential services continue to operate while rest of the services are suspended till March 31. People should not violate rules by crowding the streets”, Thackeray has been quoted as saying.
District borders in Maharashtra will also be sealed to curb the spread of coronavirus.

The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
