Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing the nation on Tuesday (30 June) appealed to all Indian citizens to take care of health in light of the incoming monsoon season and extended the Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana till November end.

He said that while the country has successfully managed to contain the Covid-19 situation by measures like lockdown, many are lowering their guard by not taking adequate precautions since Unlock-1.

Prime Minister Modi thus asked both organisations and individuals to take appropriate action against those not following the rules. While citing the example of the Bulgarian Prime Minister being fined for not wearing a mask while visiting a church, Prime Minister Modi urged the required agencies to work on a similar footing.

After mentioning a slew of measures taken to protect the poor from an adverse Covid-19 impact, Prime Minister Modi said that agriculture is the predominant activity in the monsoon season. He added that the coming months also bring with them a slew of festivals like Shravan, Durga Puja and Diwali.

He thus announced that the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana will be extended till Diwali and Chhat puja - that is till the end of November, until when families will receive 5 Kg of rice or wheat and 1 Kg of chana per month. This scheme benefiting 80 crore Indians will cost Rs 90,000 crore.

Prime Minister Modi also assured that work will continue to uplift the under-privileged with the help of economic activities. He ended the speech by again appealing to everyone to take care of their health while taking all Covid-19 precautions including wearing a mask/face shield in public.
