The Election Commission (EC) has dismissed the complaint filed by Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee against Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi for having called the former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi 'Bharashtachari No 1' (Corrupt No 1), reports India Today.

"Prima facie, we did not figure out any literal violation of MCC as given in the Election Commission of India instructions, case is therefore disposed off," said the poll panel of the EC.

PM Modi was apparently referring to the infamous Bofors scam, in which Rajiv Gandhi was accused of receiving kickbacks from Swedish defence and arms manufacturer, Bofors, for the sale of artillery guns to India.

PM Modi's corruption accusations were severely condemned by the Congress party with Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra asserting that PM Modi had "insulted the martyrdom of a righteous and holy man in his unbridled craze".
