Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a series of tweets on Wednesday (8 April) criticised an online campaign which is said to be doing the rounds urging all Indians to give the Prime Minister a standing ovation for five minutes on 12 April.

This is the alleged campaign poster being circulated on social media.

Various critics of the Prime Minister had shared the poster on social media while questioning the underlining sycophancy. Subsequently the Prime Minister publicly rejected the said campaign.

In his tweets, Prime Minister Modi said that at first glance, this campaign seems to be a ploy designed to drag his name into a controversy.

He subsequently said that if someone indeed has the intention to honour him, they should instead take the initiative to support a poor family until the end of the coronavirus pandemic. He added that nothing would honour him more than someone taking the responsibility to help the poor.
