Police Arrest Indian-Origin British Citizen, Aide For Betting On IPL Matches In Mumbai Hotel

Mumbai Police have arrested an Indian-origin British citizen, and his aide for allegedly betting on an Indian Premier League (IPL) match from a luxury hotel on Wednesday (1 April) NDTV reports.

According to Senior Police inspector Mahesh Desai, the Unit-9 of Crime Branch acted on specific information and raided the hotel in Andheri (West) and found the duo placing online bets on IPL matches via a betting site.

They would collect the initial amount and then provide user ID and passwords to interested people to place bets, Desai said. The duo was identified as Rishi Dariyanani (40) and Mahesh Khemlana (39) and resided in Hong Kong another officer said.

Interrogation revealed that the duo came to Mumbai after the IPL started in March for betting purpose and used to stay in star hotels in suburban Juhu and Bandra, which was also their base of operations.

Police also seized seven mobile phones, two laptops, one notebook, credit and debit cards along with Rs 6.75 lakhs in Indian, US and Hong Kong currency from them. The duo was produced before a court in Thursday and send into police custody till 6 May, the official said.
