West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has demanded that doctors end their strike by 2.00 pm on Thursday (13 June) over the assault of junior doctors in Kolkata’s NRS Medical College, or suffer consequences, India Today has reported.

“I condemn doctors who have gone on strike. Policemen die in line of duty but the police don't go on a strike”, Mamata was quoted as saying by a news report.

In an incident on Monday night (9 June) family members of a 75-year-old patient named Mohammed Shahid began stone-pelting inside the hospital after alleging negligence which led to his death. In the assault, an intern suffered grave injuries but is now said to be stable.

Doctors in Kolkata thus went on a strike in the state capital, which has earned the wrath of Mamata Banerjee. The doctors among other things are demanding better security.

Mamata also alleged that the strike is a BJP conspiracy and threatened that the government would be forced to take action if the instruction is not heeded to.
