Chandigarh electricity department has started work on the smart grid project in the union territory. The department, in the first phase of the project, has allotted the work for installation of 30,000 smart meters to replace older meters in four sectors, six villages and the Industrial area, Times of India has reported.

The four sectors include sector 29, sector 31, sector 47 and sector 48 while the six villages are Faida, Ram Darbar, Hallomajra, Raipur Kalan, Makhanmajra and Daria.

A UT official told TOI that smart meters will benefit both consumers as well as the electricity department.

“The smart meters will reduce the problem of tampering to zero. In case of tripping of the main line, an instant alert will go to the control room. The new system will be beneficial to the department as well as the consumers.” said the UT official.

The detailed project report (DPR) of the Chandigarh’s smart grid was recently approved by the National Smart Grid Mission (NSGM) and the Central government agreed to bear 30 per cent of the cost.

The smart system will enable consumers of the department to track and manage their power consumption online at the same time enabling the electricity department to take stock of the load, voltage, outage, peak-hour demand and consumption of power in the city.
