Prabuddha Scheme: Karnataka Government To Fund Both Rich, Poor SC/ST Students Aiming To Study Abroad

Students belonging to scheduled caste/scheduled tribe who want to pursue their education abroad will be paid for by the state government in Karnataka under a new scheme launched named Prabuddha.

The scheme is available for those students who have cleared Scholastic Aptitude/Assessment Test (SAT), Graduate Record Examinations (GRE), Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) and similar ones.

Deccan Herald quoted Priyank Kharge, Minister of Social Welfare as saying, “In the existing scheme, students with 49-51 per cent score were funded. Also, from 2001 to 2018, only 282 students were covered.”

sThose families whose income falls below rupees eight lakh a year will be covered for their tuition fee, travel and accommodation. Families whose income i between Rs 8 and Rs 15 lakh will enjoy 50 per cent coverage and those families that earn above Rs 15 lakh a year will have 33 per cent coverage along with counselling being provided free of cost.

Deccan Herald quoted Dr G Parameshwara as saying, “Most students who have been funded to study abroad have chosen the USA. Steps will be taken to send students to other nations as well. I myself studied abroad on a student scholarship.”
