Prasar Bharati CEO Shashi Shekhar confirmed on Wednesday (25 March) that the public broadcasting network is in talks with the rights holders of Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan, B R Chopra’s Mahabharat to telecast the acclaimed TV series’ on DD National.
This statement was issued by Shekhar in response to a tweet by journalist Akhilesh Sharma who said that many social media users have demanded re-telecasting the serials as the country enters a 21 day lockdown.
The Ramayan TV serial directed by Ramanand Sagar first aired on DD National in 1987 and B R Chopra’s Mahabharat aired a year later.
Both the adaptations generated record audiences and have gone down as one of the most successful screenings in Indian television history. Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan was viewed by at least 650 million people in 55 countries and B R Chopra’s Mahabharat received a similar reception.
