On the 78th anniversary of the Quit India Movement Day yesterday (9 August), President Ram Nath Kovind honoured 202 freedom fighters from across the nation expressing gratitude and reverence for their invaluable service and dedication to the national cause of freedom and independence against repressive British colonial rule, reports Times of India.

Every year, on the occasion, President of India holds an "At Home" reception to honour the freedom fighters. However, given the constraints presented by COVID-19 pandemic, the Rashtrapati Bhawan could not host the event this year.

Thus, the governments in all states and union territories (UTs) have been requested to honour and felicitate the freedom fighters with a shawl and angavastram by the District Magistrate/Additional District Magistrate/Sub District Magistrate reaching out to them at their very homes on the behalf of President Kovind.

The Rashtrapati Bhawan has already provided the states and UTs with the shawls and angavastram for freedom fighters, through their resident commissioners.

The Quit India Movement had been launched by Mahatma Gandhi on 8 August 1942, demanding an end to the British Raj in India.
