President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with his cabinet colleagues and other Bharatiya Janata Party leaders paid tribute to the former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his first death anniversary on Friday (16 August).
A prayer meeting was held at Sadaiv Atal- the memorial to Atal Bihari Vajpayee - on Friday to mark the first death anniversary of the former prime minister.
Besides President and PM, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP Working President JP Nadda and members of Vajpayee’s family were among those who paid tributes to the former PM amid the playing of hymns and devotional music, reports Tribune India.
Vajpayee, who was the first non-Congress Prime Minister completing his tenure from 1999-2004, passed away at the age of 93 on 16 August 2018 after prolonged illness.
After his death, Modi government dedicated his memorial to the nation in December 2018. The central samadhi platform at the memorial comprises nine square black polished granite stone blocks, capped with a ‘diya’ in the centre.

Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
