The Adi-dravidar Welfare and Scheduled Tribes Welfare Department under the Puducherry government has formulated a new scheme wherein it will pay full school and college fees of scheduled caste and scheduled tribe students irrespective of their family income, ANI has reported.
Under this new scheme the government will pay full fees including tuition fee, exam fee, term fee, lab fee, book fee and uniform fees for SC, ST students who pursue school and higher, professional and technical courses in the Union Territory.
The fees will be directly transferred to the account of the beneficiaries via the DBT scheme. This will enable SC, ST students to study in any private school within Puducherry for free.
The scheme has been approved by the Puducherry Lieutenant Governor who has directed the welfare and finance department to ensure adequate funds are available for the scheme's implementation.
The scheme is expected to benefit over 6,700 SC, ST students and will cost the public exchequer Rs 42 crore per year.
