Pune Police’s No Nonsense Approach To Rash Driving, Slaps Criminal Cases Against Violators

Pune Traffic Police have booked 47 people for rash driving under Section 279 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and violators will now face court cases, Times of India has reported. These drivers were found driving on the wrong side of the road. Criminal cases filed against these drivers is likely to impact their ease of getting passports and obtaining jobs.
“Under the guidance of Tejaswi Satpute, the deputy commissioner of police (traffic), a special drive against wrong-side driving was conducted in the city on Saturday. These careless and rash drivers were booked under the Indian Penal Code and criminal proceedings will be initiated against them,” Police Inspector (Traffic) Anil Patil told Times of India.
If convicted under Section 279 of the IPC, an offender can be fined Rs 1,000 or face imprisonment for up to six months. Vimantal and Chatrushangi areas of Pune reported the highest and second-highest number of cases respectively.
Ajay Aggarwal, the founder non-governmental organisation (NGO) Margadarshak told the police that the number 47 was too low. However, Rajendra Sidhaye of Save Pune Traffic Movement felt that the cases were too harsh.
