Pune has emerged the best Indian city when it comes to the ease of living index which was launched by Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, PTI has reported.

According to the report, the index was based on four parameters namely governance, social institutions, economic and physical infrastructure. In all 111 cities participated in this survey.

While Pune ranked number one, it was followed by Navi Mumbai and Greater Mumbai for the second and third spot. Tirupati, Chandigarh, Raipur, Bhopal and Indore also featured in the top 10 list.

Coming to the other metros, Delhi languished at the sixty-fifth spot while Chennai ranked 14. The report claimed that Kolkata refused to participate in this survey.

As per a statement made by Puri, this initiative was announced in June 2016 with an intention to rank 116 Indian cities. The process of implementing this index commenced in January 2018, as a form of a litmus test to help assess the progress made in the urban environment via various initiatives.

According to an Indian Express report, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs came up with this index to help the cities assess their livability via global and national benchmarks. It also encourages cities to move towards an outcome-based approach in urban planning and management.
