It would seem that the Indian National Congress cannot catch a break today. When they thought they could sit down to rejoice the political gains they made in Punjab in the form of 8 seats, there is fresh trouble between the leaders in the state unit.

Addressing the media, Congress’ Amarinder Singh said that Congress had to pay for Navjot Singh Sidhu’s visit to Pakistan. He further added that the loss of Bathinda in Punjab for the Congress was because of Sidhu’s reckless remarks on the desecration of the religious texts in 2015, an issue of great sensitivity in Bathinda.

Sidhu has been alienated by his own party leaders, and with the Congress winning 8 of the 13 seats in the state as Congress struggles for existence across India, Amarinder Singh would look to call the shots in the immediate future.

Singh added, “Indians will not tolerate anyone hugging the Pakistan army chief’, in his press conference. As the NDA secures another term in the centre, the onus will lie on the Congress to resolve issues within the state unit. With Rahul Gandhi backing Sidhu and Amarinder Singh’s stronghold in the state, the rift is expected to deepen going forward.
