Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh Write To Centre Asking For Revision Of Housing Scheme Targets

State governments of Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab have written to the Ministry of Rural Development asking the Centre to revise the targets mentioned in the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G), The New Indian Express has reported . This is due to the governments not being able to find enough number of beneficiaries for the scheme.
In the case of Haryana, the target was set for 38,422 beneficiaries, but the state government was only able to identify 21,502. The remaining housing units are reported to be treated as surrendered.
“We have been noticing this ploy by successive governments to attract voters by throwing numbers at them.... I am glad three states have taken the initiative to flag the government on unrealistic targets,” Prof. HS Solanki from National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD) told The New Indian Express.
Punjab has asked for a reduction of more than 50 per cent in its case. 12,500 is the number proposed as opposed to the target of 31,084 homes. Himachal Pradesh’s target was 28,765, and the state government has reverted to the Centre asking them to revise the number to 24,000 beneficiaries.
