Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has topped the QS rankings among Indian colleges, The Hindu has reported. This was the first India specific ranking exercise undertaken by QS, a think-tank which assesses universities across the world.

The Indian Institute of Science was ranked second while IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Kanpur standing third, fourth, fifth and sixth. University of Hyderabad and University of Delhi stand seventh and eighth respectively in the rankings.

Jawaharlal Nehru University has been excluded from the survey. Giving the reason, Simona Bizzozero of QS said that JNU is a primarily doctoral research institution and instead features in QS World University Rankings by Subject.

The Indian government has been taking measures to improve world rankings of Indian institutes of higher education. The government has allowed higher autonomy in intake of foreign students and foreign faculty as internationalisation criteria remains a weak spot for higher education institutes.
