At today’s (25 May) meeting of the Congress working committee in New Delhi, the party’s national president Rahul Gandhi offered to resign from his position, but the resignation was not accepted by the committee, reports The Times of India.
Several senior Congress leaders such as Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Captain Amarinder Singh, Sheila Dixit, among others were present at the working committee’s meeting.
The meeting follows the Congress party’s poor showing in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, in which it was only a able to secure 52 seats, as against the ruling party’s 303. At a press conference in the evening of 23 May, Rahul Gandhi had taken full responsibility for his party’s debacle.
The party president had conceded defeat and also congratulated BJP leader Smriti Irani, who had beaten him in his family stronghold of Amethi.
In the aftermath of the results, the heads of three state units of the party had also submitted their resignations to Gandhi, including Raj Babbar from Uttar Pradesh.
