Rajya Sabha Passes Bills To Reduce Salaries And Allowances Of Ministers, MPs By 30 Per Cent

The Rajya Sabha on Friday (18 September) passed the bills seeking reduction in the salaries and allowances of ministers and MPs by 30 per cent for one year, reports Hindustan Times.

The Salaries, Allowances and Pension of Members of Parliament (Amendments) Bill, 2020 and the Salaries and Allowances of Ministers (Amendment) Bill, 2020 were moved in the Upper House by Union Ministers Prahlad Joshi and G Kishan Reddy.

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, the Minister of State (MoS) Home Affairs said that he was moving the Bill on behalf of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

"To control this pandemic and provide relief the Centre is working on all angles. Under this amendment, there will be a deduction of 30 per cent in the salaries and allowances of MPs, Ministers from April 1, 2020, to March 2021. I urge all MPs to unanimously pass this Bill," Reddy said, reports Times of India.

Following Reddy's statement, Union Minister Prahlad Joshi moved the Bill that sought reduction in the salary of MPs.

The bills were passed in the Rajya Saba by the voice vote.

Earlier on Tuesday (15 September), the Lok Sabha had passed the bill to reduce the salaries of the MPs for one year.
