A Republican candidate from North Dakota who succumbed to Covid-19 last month has been elected to the state legislature in Tuesday’s elections, Politico has reported.

David Andahl, 55, had won a challenging contest in the primaries against the incumbent chairman of the committee. However, he contracted the virus and was hospitalised for four days due to the illness.

On 5 October, Andahl passed away despite having reportedly been “very careful” about the ongoing pandemic. “He had a lot of feelings for his county … and wanting to make things better, and his heart was in farming. He wanted things better for farmers and the coal industry,” The Bismarck Tribune quoted his mother Pat Andahl.

As the voting process had already begun at the time of his death, there was no way his name could have been removed from the ballot.

Republican Senator from North Dakota Kevin Cramer had promoted and endorsed David Andahl too. “We need more Trump Republicans in the State Legislature,” Cramer had stated. Another Reds’ candidate, Dave Nehring, has been elected along with Andahl to the eighth district in the state’s House of Representatives.
