An activist of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), who was stabbed by a mob protesting against an “objectionable" Facebook post by a student on Wednesday evening in communal riot-hit Basirhat in Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, succumbed to his injuries at a hospital, News18 has reported.

The victim, identified as Kartik Ghosh, was stabbed when a mob, protesting against the Facebook post, raided his tea stall and allegedly looted all valuables and cash. Ghosh was stabbed multiple times when he protested.

"He was associated with the Sangh and had been an active worker of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for a long time. He was stabbed several times with sharp weapons during the clash in the Basirhat area. His family members brought him to R G Kar Hospital," the RSS' South Bengal General Secretary Jishnu Basu told IANS.

The violence erupted over a Facebook post last Friday about Prophet Mohammed by a 17-year-old student in Baduria. Police nabbed the boy on Monday evening, but mobs selectively vandalised shops and homes of members of the Hindu community living in the town, and blocked major roads in protest.

Failing to control mob violence and under attack for her appeasement of a minority community, state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accused the BJP for the riots. She has also accused Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi of threatening and insulting her over a phone conversation on Tuesday.
