In a surprise move, former Samajwadi Party leader and sitting Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh has donated his ancestral property to Sewa Bharti, an NGO affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), The New Indian Express has reported. The worth of the property is calculated at almost Rs 15 crores.

The donated property includes Singh’s ancestral home, worth Rs 4 crores and 10 bighas of land worth Rs 10 crores, in his ancestral village of Tarwan in Azamgarh district.

"By giving away my property in the memory of my late father to them, I have tried to make a contribution to their efforts to serve the society," Singh said in a statement on Wednesday (28 November). The move is a surprise turnaround for Singh, who had throughout his political career condemned the RSS as a communal organisation. Singh refused to respond to speculations that he was looking to regain political relevance through the saffron route.

Singh also explained his support for the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, stating that there had always been a temple there, the only question now was to create a grand temple matching the high stature of Lord Ram.
