Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTEs) will be getting SIM-enabled tablets on premier trains, The Hindu has reported. The initiative is a first for trains originating from Mumbai.

“It will help in updating the charts in the passenger reservation system (PRS), thereby benefiting waitlisted people,” said Aarti Parihar, senior divisional commercial manager, Western Railway-Mumbai.

Passenger lists are printed on paper and given to TTEs. TTEs updated the PRS after physically checking the passengers. The passenger list at the next station reflects the updated system. Presently this system is operated manually.

Real time update of passengers information will help wait-listed passengers to know whether they have got a confirmed seat. This will also make the allocation of empty berths a transparent exercise.

Discretionary powers of TTEs will be reduced and the allocation will be done automatically. However, TTEs will continue to have powers to allocate seats for passengers with reservation against cancellation (RAC) status. This change will also reduce the usage of paper. WR 52 tablets have been provided by Center for Railway Information Systems for the initiative.
