Sushant Singh Rajput
The Supreme Court on Wednesday (19 August) ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate film actor Sushant Singh Rajput's death case.
The SC also directed the Mumbai police to co-operate with the CBI and hand over case-related information and evidence gathered so far to the investigating team.
Justice Hrishikesh Roy said the CBI will be competent to probe not only Patna FIR but any other FIR in connection with the case.
The top court noted that the Mumbai Police have registered only an accidental death report in connection with Rajput’s death, therefore it have limited investigation powers, whereas the case registered by Bihar Police is a full fledged FIR which has been already referred to CBI.
The Bollywood actor was found dead at his Mumbai apartment on 14 June. The death was initially termed as suicide by local police. However, many have suspected foul play in the case and had sought a neutral CBI inquiry.
The top court ensured that there was no confusion about CBI being sole authority to investigate the mystery behind Rajput’s death and no other state police could interfere with it.
"It is court ordered CBI investigation. Maharashtra police must comply and assist", ordered the bench.
The apex court order came on a plea by Rajput's girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty seeking transfer of FIR registered in Patna to Mumbai. The FIR was filed by Sushant's father alleging Rhea of manipulating the actor and money fraud.
