SC Rejects Plea Seeking Extension Of Counselling Schedule For Vacant Post-Graduate Medical Seats

The Supreme Court today (21 June) rejected a petition by the Education Promotion Society of India, a registered group of over 1,300 educational institutions of the country, which had sought to extend the schedule for counselling to fill a large number of vacant seats, reports India Today.
At present there are 606 vacant seats in post-graduate medical and dental courses in deemed universities and private colleges.
A vacation bench of justices Deepak Gupta and Surya Kant dismissed the plea, observing that, "the question is not whether it has power to do it but whether it should allow the deemed universities and colleges to fill up their vacant seats by making an exception to the set schedule of admissions."
The deemed colleges and universities had asked for additional time to carry out the stray vacancy counselling round, contending that doing the same would allow them to fill in the vacant slots left in their courses.
