Expanding its production capacity in a big way, Pune-based vaccine maker Serum Institute of India (SII) has already produced over 10 crore doses of Covishield in the ongoing month of June so far, reports Economic Times.

As per the information provided by SII to the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), the company has sent 45 batches of Covishield, amounting to 10.8 crore doses to the Central Drugs Laboratory (CDL), Kasauli for release in June.

This gains significance as it comes at a time when India has been ramping up the daily vaccinations under the nationwide inoculation drive against COVID-19.

It should be noted that in May, SII's director for government and regulatory affairs, Prakash Kumar Singh had written to Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah that the vaccine's production would be ramped up to 10 crore doses in June.

He had said, "We are committed to enhancing the production capacity of our Covishield vaccine and have been working round-the-clock in spite of various challenges being faced by us because of COVID-19 pandemic. We are pleased to inform that in the month of June we will be able to manufacture and supply nine to 10 crore doses of our Covishield vaccine to our country as compared to our present production capacity of 6.5 crore doses in May."
