In a setback for Rajasthan Chief Minister (CM) Ashok Gehlot's assertion that his government would not implement the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), assembly Speaker C P Joshi said that the state government was bound to implement the law as per the Constitution, reports The Times of India.

Contradicting CM Gehlot's push against the implementation of the law passed by the both houses of the parliament, Joshi underscored that citizenship is a subject of the centre and not of the state.

Speaker Joshi was speaking at the annual award distribution ceremony of the Mira Girls College in Udaipur on 7 February when he made the remarks against the State CM's stance on the matter.

Speaker Joshi's remarks come at a time when certain sections of the nation have been witnessing protestations against the implementation of CAA, which grants citizenship to the Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis, Buddhists and Christians who have been religiously persecuted in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
