Mamata Banerjee - left, Uddhav Thackeray - right
Senior Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut today (4 March) announced that the party has cancelled its plan to contest the West Bengal polls. Raut claimed that this decision has been taken so that they can stand in solidarity with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
In the message Raut claimed that this decision was taken after having a discussion with party chief Uddhav Thackeray.
"Looking at the present scenario, it appears like a 'Didi vs All' fight", said Raut while claiming that Money, Muscle and the Media is being used against Mamata. Raut also wished Mamata a "roaring success" in the polls and also called her a "real Bengal tigress".
Shiv Sena had contested West Bengal polls on 21 seats in 2016 and had lost deposits in all of them.
Shiv Sena had also decided to contest the recently concluded Bihar assembly polls, but without much success.
It was reported that Shiv Sena lost all 22 seats it contested and also got lower votes than NOTA. Incidentally, the party had initially decided to contest 50 seats in the state but only 30 of its candidates filed the nomination papers. Finally 22 were able to contest the polls as eight were disqualified during the document
