An encounter broke out today (27 February) between security forces and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorists in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) in which two of the jihadists were neutralised, reports The New Indian Express.
The firefight was triggered after the terrorists fired upon security forces who were conducting a cordon and search operation in the Meemendar area of Shopian in South Kashmir. The operation was initiated following a tip-off about the presence of militants in the area.
After killing the two JeM operatives, the troops also recovered weapons and ammunition from the site of the encounter.
The encounter comes on the heels of a successful Indian Air Force (IAF) operation in Pakistan yesterday in which JeM’s largest terror camp in Balakot, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was destroyed, resulting in many casualties for the banned outfit.
The strike was seen as a response to a JeM suicide bombing on a CRPF convoy in Pulwama a few weeks ago, in which more than 40 jawans were martyred.
Shopian and Pulwama are both in the restive South Kashmir area, which has seen a resurgence in terrorist activities in recent years.
