West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar broke down into tears while speaking to media persons on Saturday (15 May) after concluding his three-day visit to the violence-hit area in the State.

Governor said amid tears that people he met with pleaded with him to save their lives; they cried in front of him and asked him as to should they convert their religion to remain alive.

Governor said that he was ashamed of himself, that he had to hear such moving pleas from the family who have lost their family members.

In the video, when a reporter asks the governor why he is crying, he asked the reporter if she did not hear what people said? That a mother who lost her son, and someone who lost their father asked(him) if they convert their religion, will they live?

Governor said that he never imagined that a situation like this ever happened; he added that when he went to Coochbehar, people told him that they had put up the flags but still can not save themselves.

Governor added that Covid-19 is a crisis, but this (violence) is a more significant crisis, that in any free country; such post-poll violence is unacceptable. The people have to pay with their lives for exercising their vote, and they have nowhere to turn.

He said that while the perpetrators of violence slept soundly without fear of law, violence-affected people could not even breathe easily as their homes are burnt and bombed to grounds.

He requested the chief minister of Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, to stop this brutal violence. He claimed that Mamata has overlooked the violence and had not done anything to stop it. He added that police and administration is also doing nothing to stop the violence.

He concluded by saying that in a state where people are begging that they will convert their religion just to remain alive can not be called a democratic state with the rule of law.
